In 1992, the Holy Rosary Sisters were drawn to expand our ministry. Noirin Walsh and Lily Duignan from Ireland, and Therese Egwonwu from Nigeria took Spanish-language courses in Bolivia. They were invited to work in Nuestra Senora del Pueblito y San Miguel Parish in Mexico City. From the beginning, they focused on improving the lives of women in a male-dominated society. They increased their outreach to the poor in Acapulco in two parishes: San Nicolas de Bari and Neustra Se Nora del Perpetuo Soccorro.

Today…
Sr. Therese continues her work in Mexico City with the Small Basic Christian Communities and with drug and alcohol addicts. The number of people who have been rehabilitated is testimony to her work.

Sr. Noirin Walsh – with volunteer help from three medical doctors, a psychiatrist, and a dentist – coordinates a clinic for those who cannot afford medical treatment. She runs a therapy group for abused women and provides training so they can reach out to others in similar situations.

Sr. Lillie Duignan also works with Small Basic Christian Communities. Together they visit the prison and have Bible study groups with men and women prisoners, and run a cooperative for the poor.

Sr. Maire Shine trains men and women Church leaders for different ministries. The goal of the formation courses is to enable the laity take their rightful places in the Church’s Liturgy.

The Holy Rosary Sisters have collaborated with Caritas and other NGOs to provide a three-story shelter for cancer and AIDS patients who travel from rural areas into the city for treatment, which is usually long term.

President Fox’s government has brought about some improvements, but the economic situation of the poor and middle classes seems to worsen, due in part to neo-liberalism. The crime rate is high, most of it drug-related. There is a sense of hope that things will change.

The Holy Rosary Sisters welcome young Mexican women to join us in our health, education, pastoral, and social work ministries in Mexico and beyond.
