Zambia
The Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary came to Zambia
at an auspicious time: one year before the new independent nation
came to birth. The federation disintegrated in 1963 and Zambian independence
was proclaimed October 24, 1964.
Many young, enthusiastic sisters joined the new venture;
they quickly entered this new world of the Zambian people by visiting
families, listening to their stories, watching their ways of being
and doing, learning their language ... and being enriched.
The sisters learned to practice patience as their outreach
grew geographically and ministerially, including hospital and community
health programs, education through mission and government schools,
home-craft education for women, community development, and pastoral
care.
The sisters experienced struggle, mistakes, and misunderstandings
during their search, but also great life and joy. True to Bishop
Shanahan’s spirit, the sisters did not put down roots; they
remained ready to discern with the people their greater needs, handed
projects and institutions over to other Congregations, and started
fresh in new pastures.
Today…
Forty years later, sixteen sisters of five nationalities
minister to the Zambian people through medical, education, youth,
social work, development, and pastoral ministries. The sisters
provide home-based and hospice care for people with HIV/AIDS.
The
sisters are committed to promoting vocations. Many young girls are
interested in becoming Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary and
are in constant contact with the sisters, who are delighted to welcome
their first Zambian sister. She was professed in 2002 and is now
in mission; another is in training.
The journey continues. The Holy Rosary Sisters
remain dedicated and committed to respond to the times and to go
where the needs are greatest. With reduced numbers and increased
experience, the sisters go forward in hope and trust in God. With
God’s help, they show His love to the Zambian people.
